6/21/2013 - HOMICIDE - OCEANO, CA

The San Luis Obispo  County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance with information leading to the arrest and conviction of Suspect(s) involved with the June 21, 2013, murder of Joseph Padilla.

On June 21, 2013 Joseph Padilla was located in front of a residence in the 1300 block of 19th street in Oceano CA. Padilla suffered from a knife attack and subsequently died from his injuries.  The investigation is ongoing.

5/25/2013 - RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURE FIRE - SUSPECTED ARSON

On Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 12:13 AM, two companies of Paso Robles Firefighters and one Battalion Chief responded to a residential structure fire at 612 Olive Street in Paso Robles.

 

Firefighters arriving at scene found a two story residence under construction fully involved in fire. The fire building was located directly behind an existing residence at 612 Olive Street and was rapidly extending into neighboring residences in all directions. Firefighters quickly deployed large fire attack lines on the main body of fire while simultaneously initiating aggressive interior fire attack operations on the home at 612 Olive Street. Fire attack efforts were hindered by live power lines down near the fire.

 

The fire was declared contained at 1:16 AM and under control at 2:00 AM. The two story home under construction was a total loss and the residence at 612 Olive Street suffered significant fire damage. Several other adjoining properties were damaged from the radiant heat generated by the fire.

 

Fortunately no community members were injured or displaced by the fire. There were no firefighter injuries.

 

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by Department of Emergency Services fire investigators.

12/13/2012 - COMMERCIAL BURGLARY IN THE VILLAGE OF ARROYO GRANDE, CA

COMMERCIAL BURGLARY IN THE VILLAGE OF ARROYO GRANDE, CA

 

On December 13, 2012, at approximately 12:30 AM, officers responded to Broadway Jewelers (121 E. Branch Street) on a reported burglary alarm.  Officers arrived on scene and noticed the front glass door to the business had been broken out and an undisclosed amount of jewelry had been stolen from within the business.  Officers searched the interior and exterior of the business; however, they were unable to locate the suspect(s).  The Detective Section was called to the business and the scene was processed.

 

The “Operation Blue Watch” (police video surveillance system) cameras greatly assisted in the investigation, as the vehicle used by the suspect(s) was captured on several different cameras throughout the Village.  The vehicle had very distinct markings on the front engine hood and fenders.

 

On the afternoon of December 13, 2012, patrol officers located the vehicle used in the burglary parked in the 100 block of Tally Ho Road.  It was confirmed that the vehicle had been previously reported as stolen from Santa Maria.  The Arroyo Grande Police Department is processing the stolen vehicle, in an effort to identify the suspect(s).

8/18/2012 - ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON - ATASCADERO, CA

On August 18, 2012 at approximately 9:45 PM, Atascadero Police Department officers were dispatched to Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton for a report of a subject who had been assaulted in the City of Atascadero earlier that night.  Officers contacted the 20-year-old male victim, who told them he was physically assaulted with an unknown object by at least one suspect, possibly three.  The incident occurred somewhere in the area of the Sunken Gardens Park in downtown Atascadero.  The victim sustained major injuries, including multiple fractures to his face.  Following the assault, the suspects took the victim’s wallet and cellular phone.

 

The three suspects are described as white males.  The primary assailant was described as being tall with dark hair.  The victim stated the suspects fled the scene in a black Pontiac.

7/6/2012 - COMMERCIAL BURGLARY/VANDALISM - TEMPLETON, CA

Sheriff’s Deputies are investigating a series of burglaries and vandalism that occurred sometime between Friday, July 6, 2012 at 6:30 pm and Sunday, July 8, 2012 at 10:15 at a business complex located at 212 South Main Street, Templeton, CA.  Several of the businesses located within the complex were broken into and either burglarized, vandalized, or both.  Taken during the theft were multiple items, including a small refrigerator, 3 Dell laptop computers, 1 Gateway laptop computer, a 2’x2’ safe, a DVD player, an IPod Shuffle with speakers, a Panasonic camera, computer software, cash and other miscellaneous items.  In addition to other damage at the location, a fire extinguisher was discharged inside the building.

4/26/2012 - HATE CRIME - SAN LUIS OBISPO AND PISMO BEACH, CA

On April 26, 2012 and May 24, 2012, Bailey Brown, the Athletic Director of Mission College Preparatory Catholic High School in San Luis Obispo, was the victim of a hate crime that targeted her sexual orientation.  Brown, a lesbian, had her car vandalized on the morning of April 26, 2012 at her Pismo Beach residence.  Brown’s vehicle, a silver 4-door Ford Escort parked on Harloe St. in Pismo Beach, was keyed, spray painted, and four tires punctured.  On the morning of May 24, 2012, the Mission College Preparatory Catholic High School campus was vandalized in four separate areas with phrases targeting Brown and her sexual orientation.  The vandalism included spray painted phrases on the sidewalk and buildings as well as a printed note left at the door of the school’s administration office.

1/23/2012 - ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON - ARROYO GRANDE

The Arroyo Grande Police Department is seeking the public`s assistance with the investigation of an assault with a deadly weapon that occurred in their City.

On January 23, 2012 at approximately 4:23 PM, a 45 year old resident of Grover Beach was walking south in the 200 block of Spruce St. in the City of Arroyo Grande. While walking on the west side of the street, the victim was shot in the head with a pellet rifle by an unknown assailant. The victim sustained moderate injuries that required transport to the Arroyo Grande Hospital by ambulance, where he was later treated and released.

1/20/2012 - ATTEMPT MURDER - STABBING - SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA

SUMMARY:  

 

On 1/20/12 at 12:30 a.m., the San Luis Obispo Police Department investigated a stabbing that occurred near the intersection of Monterey and Broad in downtown SLO.  A group of downtown patrons, including two male victims in their 20’s, were walking back to their vehicle when they were confronted by two or more male suspects.  During the confrontation both victims were stabbed causing life threatening injuries.

10/23/2011 - SUSPICIOUS DEATH INVESTIGATION

On 10/23/2011 at approximately 4:50 PM, the San Luis Obispo, CA Police Department received a 911 call regarding a male subject that appeared dead at the base of Madonna Mountain (near Lincoln and Mountain View).  Officers responded to the area and were led to the body by the reporting party.  Upon officer’s arrival, fire and medics were requested to respond to the location, at which time the male was pronounced dead.

 

Further examination of the body revealed several injuries to the face and head.  Due to the suspicious nature of the death and injuries, San Luis Obispo Police Detectives and the San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Coroner responded to the location.  Currently the cause of death has not been determined and the investigation is being considered a possible homicide. 

 

The San Luis Obispo Police Department is asking for the public’s help with any information regarding suspicious activity seen or heard on the trails around Madonna Mountain.  The victim was positively identified as Charles Lavenson, who is a resident of San Luis Obispo.  Mr. Lavenson is known to be an avid walker and is often seen walking around the city and on local trails.  Lavenson was found wearing khaki pants, a button up short sleeve shirt (white with blue stripes) and brown dress shoes with white shoe laces.  Anyone who may have seen or contacted Lavenson on Sunday is asked to contact the San Luis Obispo Police Department.

 

A plastic hotel/motel room key was found in one of Lavenson’s pockets.  Police investigators are attempting to identify the hotel/motel associated with the key.  Included are pictures of the front and back of the key.

9/15/2011 - VANDALISM - HATE CRIME

Occurred at a residence in the 400 Block of Dorset Street, Cambria, CA.

 

On 09/15/11 at 11:58 PM, Sheriff Deputies, while patrol checking the area of a vandalism reported the previous evening, were notified of a malicious mischief that had just reoccurred at the same residence. During the commission of both crimes, an unidentified suspect(s) applied spray painted anti-homosexual hate slurs to the front of the residence. Sheriff Detectives are currently investigating the vandalisms as a hate crime prohibited pursuant to Penal Code section 422.6 (as defined per PC 422.55).

9/1/2011 - 1991 HOMICIDE - COLD CASE - SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA

On August 25, 1991, 20 year old Marina RUGGIERO, a resident of San Pedro, CA, traveled to San Luis Obispo with her family to attend the wedding of a family friend.  The wedding and reception took place at the Monday Club located at 1815 Monterey, which is across the street from the Holiday Inn Express, (formerly the Cuesta Canyon Lodge) at 1800 Monterey Street.

 

At approximately 11:00 PM, the San Luis Obispo Police Department received several 911 calls reporting a female victim had been stabbed in room 327 at the Cuesta Canyon Lodge.  Police and Fire personnel responded to the scene and located Marina RUGGIERO, who was unresponsive.  EMS personnel and hospital staff were unable to revive Marina and she died that night as a result of her injuries.

 

San Luis Obispo Police Department investigators are looking into old and new information to solve this homicide.  If you were in the area on or about August 25, 1991 and saw or heard anything unusual, please contact the investigators listed below.  If your information was given to law enforcement previously, investigators would still like to discuss these details with you.

8/14/2011 - FELONY VANDALISM - MULTIPLE VICTIMS IN LOS OSOS, CA

San Luis Obispo County Sheriff`s Deputies are investigating a series of vandalism cases that occurred during the early morning hours on Monday, August 15, 2011 in the Highland/Manzanita area of Los Osos, CA. To date, 45 different vehicles were damaged by keying, broken windows and/or damaged tires. Deputies were summoned to the area after a person saw a window broken on a car in the 700 blk of Manzanita. Deputies found 42 vehicles damaged, leaving notes on the cars for victims to call in with their specific information. No suspects have been located.

7/15/2011 - HIT-AND-RUN COLLISION WITH INJURY - OCEANO, CA

The California Highway Patrol, San Luis Obispo Area, is investigating a hit-and-run traffic collision with injury that occurred at 4:30 pm on Friday, July 15, 2011 at the intersection of Highway 1 and Paso Robles Street in Oceano, CA.  The vehicles involved were:

 

2009 GMC Sierra (white) with tool boxes and ladders - Suspect Vehicle
2007 Kia Rondo (white) - Victim Vehicle

The white GMC Sierra pick up was left disabled at the scene.  That driver fled the scene on foot.  The CHP are looking for any possible witnesses to the traffic collision or anyone that has information regarding the possible identity of the driver of the GMC Sierra pick up.

5/12/2011 - SUSPICIOUS FIRE PASO ROBLES

On May 12, 2011, at approximately 4:17 p.m., Department of Emergency Services responded to a fire involving two four-unit apartment buildings in the 3400 block of Park Street in Paso Robles, CA. Forty-one firefighters from Paso Robles and a number of area fire departments extinguished the fire at approximately 5:31 p.m.

 

Six apartment units (contained within two buildings) sustained approximately $695,250 in fire damage ($585,250 building/$110,000 contents). The value of the property saved was $718,750. The fire displaced a total of 22 residents. Those residents will not be allowed to re-occupy the buildings until substantial repairs have been completed.

 

Fire investigators surveyed the fire scene and interviewed a number of witnesses. They determined the fire began in an area behind a dumpster located between two fences. The dumpster was positioned at the rear of the apartment building sustaining the greatest damage.

 

Fire investigators were unable to determine the material first ignited or the heat source, but were able to rule out most accidental causes. The fire was found to be suspicious in nature. Fire investigators seek the assistance of people who may have witnessed the very early stages of the fire, saw people in the area prior to the fire, or otherwise possess information regarding the fire.

On March 30, 2011 at approximately 10:28 pm, Officers from the Atascadero Police Department responded to the Shell Gas Station located at 8000 Morro Road in the City of Atascadero to a report of an armed robbery 

 

When officers arrived on the scene they met with the store clerk who told them that the suspect had fled the business on foot south bound toward Morro Road after obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash.  Officers immediately conducted a search of the surrounding area and were unable to locate the suspect.  According to the clerk and video obtained at the business, the suspect entered the business with his hooded sweatshirt covering his head and was wearing a white baseball type hat under the hood.  He had a black bandana covering his face and was wearing sunglass. When he entered the business he immediately pointed what appeared to be a silver revolver type handgun at the clerk and motioned toward the register.  Fearing for her life the clerk opened the register and the suspect removed the money from the drawer.  After obtaining the cash, the suspect then fled the business on foot south bound toward Morro Road.

 

Suspect:

Male, unknown race, in his early twenties.  He was described as being between 5’07” to 5’10” tall with a medium build.  He was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt with colored graphics on it, blue jeans, and white sneakers with black colored tips.  The suspect had the hood up covering his head and was wearing a white baseball type hat under the hooded sweatshirt and a black bandana over his face. He was also wearing sunglasses.  The suspect was armed with a silver colored revolver type handgun.
